All Inspections

During a routine inspection

We joined Her Majesty's Inspectorate of Prisons (HMIP) on their planned visit to the Rivendell Unit. We only looked at the Rivendell Unit so did not consider how the provision worked in the main prison. We, HMIP and Ofsted inspectors held discussions with all the young women using this unit at various points during the week. Also HMIP completed a pre-inspection questionnaire and this asked specific questions about the healthcare services.

We found that the young women were extremely happy with the provider's services. They told us 'The nurses are bril", "They have done so much for me it has been the best" and "They even got me to sort my teeth out.' The young women tended to use Spectrum services on a limited basis but we saw that they were involved in decisions about the treatment they received.

From the information we reviewed and our discussions we found that the young women saw the GP and the provider's nurses in a timely fashion. We found that the provider had successfully made a business case for a refurbishment of the healthcare centre. At the time of our visit the refurbishment programme was nearing completion but action had been taken to make sure clinics continued to operate. The staff were very mindful of the need to ensure the young women were kept separate from women in the main prison. Thus, specific arrangements were made around scheduling appointments.

We found that the directly provided services operated to a good standard.
