During a routine inspection

Icon Dental Care is a small dental practice with a single dental surgery based in premises which provide a range of health related services. The surgery serves the local community and the area surrounding the city of Exeter. This was the providers’ first inspection since registering this practice. Patients told us they travel from further away as they wished to remain with a dentist they valued. One person told us, “The dentist is brilliant; I’ve never had such a good dentist.” Whilst another person told us, “The dentist takes the time to talk with me before the check up or treatment starts. I find this reassuring.”

We found that patients were respected and involved in their treatment. They were provided with information relevant to their needs from a range of sources including the providers’ website and an information file in the reception area. Patient privacy and dignity was respected.

Patients care and treatment was based on a full mouth assessment. Treatment was provided in line with treatment plans. Appointments were made at times convenient to the patient and emergency treatment appointments were available if patients required treatment.

The surgery appeared clean and tidy. One patient told us “It always appears immaculate to me; even the tools are kept in packets until needed.” The dental nurse ensured the surgery area was cleaned between patients as well as at the end of each day. Dental equipment was cleaned in a way which demonstrated compliance with current department of health guidelines.

Recruitment ensured staff were suitably knowledgeable and experienced to fulfil their role. All staff received a disclosure and barring service check and all clinical staff were registered with the General Dental Council and held professional indemnity insurance.

The records we looked at were accurate and fit for purpose. Records relating to the running of the practice were up to date and reviewed by the providers’ staff.
