During an inspection looking at part of the service

When we inspected this service on 5 March 2013 we found concerns with regards to the providers assessing and monitoring the quality of service provision. We found that the service did not have effective systems in place to evidence the regular monitoring of the quality and safety of the service provided. This meant that where people were not happy with their care and treatment, themes and trends could not be identified to assist the service in improving the quality of care they provided.

Following this inspection the provider sent us an action plan detailing actions they would take to ensure compliance.

This was a follow up inspection to check compliance. We found there had been improvements made. The provider had implemented systems to monitor health and safety such as the regular testing of water temperatures to protect people from the risk of the Legionella bacteria. The provider had also implemented changes to their staff recruitment policy and practice to protect people who used the service from the risk of abuse.

During a routine inspection

People who used the service were happy with the care and treatment they received. One person told us, 'The dentist is very good, they explained how to look after my teeth.' Another person said, 'They are very responsive and very efficient if you need an appointment.'

We saw that people were treated with respect and in a polite manner by the staff at the service. Feedback received from people in a recent survey was positive about their experience.

The environment was clean and tidy on the day of our inspection. People told us, 'It's always clean and smart.' Another person told us, 'The dentists always wear gloves.'

Staff were able to demonstrate that they could identify signs of abuse and that any concerns would be reported to an appropriate authority.

We saw that staff were knowledgeable and understood their roles and responsibilities. All professional staff were registered with their regulatory body for dental professionals, the General Dental Council (GDC).

There were a lack of systems in place to evidence regular monitoring of the quality of service provision.
