Caring
As part of this assessment, we looked at 1 quality statement for the key question of caring. This was ‘independence, choice and control’. People’s independence was always encouraged and promoted ensuring they had choice and control over their care and support. Staff knew people very well and took time to observe, communicate and engage people in discussions about their immediate care needs.

Independence, choice and control
People were fully encouraged to maintain their independence and confirmed they were supported to do as much as they could for themselves and were fully involved in their care. A relative said, “I am involved in my [family members] care. It’s all running perfectly. Overall, the company is a life saver and has transformed our lives. They always try to involve [family member] in everything they do. It does make [family member] feel listened to and involved” Another relative commented, “They couldn’t be better. They are all so caring and kind. We really couldn’t wish for any better care. They chat with [family member], involve them and do what they can to keep their independence. They listen to you.”
Staff had a good understanding of protecting and respecting people's human rights ensuring they were able to make decisions about their care, treatment, and wellbeing. Staff received training about equality and diversity. One staff member told us, “I provide live-in care to 1 client. Their family are involved in their care, and I always update them with how [person] is doing. My client is also involved in their care, they choose what they would like to wear, and I show them the food menu so they can choose what they would like to eat. I always respect the client’s decisions as this is how we have been trained at People’s Choice. Reviews are completed twice a year. A member of management would have a meeting with the clients and their family, and they ask for my input too. If any changes of the care come from the review, they tell me and put a new care plan in the clients’ files.” Staff told us how they supported people to maintain their independence. One said, “We give the clients options and allow them to do what they can by themselves safely.” Another told us, “We always ask for consent and offer choices. We ask and find out what the client’s goals and dreams are and how we can support them to achieve it. We don’t try to take over the care.”
Promoting independence and maintaining skills was at the centre of the care delivery. The care plans focused on what people could do well and the support needed from staff. Care plans also set out when people needed verbal prompts rather than physical support. All these actions helped people to maintain their independence. Staff met with people, their relatives and other external professionals to discuss their support and any changes required, and these were reviewed regularly and updated when a person’s care requirements changed.
