During an inspection looking at part of the service

At our previous inspection, we identified that the provider was not meeting the expected standards in these outcome areas. We set compliance actions, requiring the provider to produce a report setting out how and when changes would be made.

At this inspection, we found that the provider had taken reasonable steps to seek the views of people using the practice and to protect people against the risks of unsafe care. The provider had also taken the action required to ensure that accurate records were kept about people's care and held securely.

During a routine inspection

This was the first time we had inspected at this practice. We spoke with five people and asked them about their experience of treatment at the practice. We also spoke with the provider and their staff about the practice. People that used the practice told us that they were supported to be involved in all aspects of their treatment. Everyone told us that they would recommend the practice to other people. One person who had attended the practice for the first time told us, 'Ten out of ten. I wish I had come sooner.'

People received care and treatment that was planned to meet their needs. Any change in people's medical and dental health needs was taken into account when planning any treatment. People's dental records did not always provide a clear record of treatment provided.

The practice had procedures in place to provide a clean environment for people's dental care and treatment. There were clear procedures to ensure that all dental instruments used were thoroughly cleaned and sterilised between each use.

Improvements in the management of the practice needed to be made. Systems in place did not ensure that risks to the health, safety and welfare of people using the practice were adequately managed. The arrangements in place for medical emergencies were also not adequate. The recruitment of staff had not previously always ensured that adequate background checks had been completed. This was already in the process of being addressed at the time of our inspection.
