During an inspection looking at part of the service

At our inspection on 16 January 2013 we found the provider was not meeting two of our standards for care and welfare of people and cleanliness and infection control. We judged that this had a minor impact on people using the service and action was needed to meet essential standards of quality and safety.

At our visit on 11 July 2013 there were no patients to speak to as there were no appointments booked at the time of the inspection. However, we looked at the action taken by provider to address shortcomings identified at our previous inspection. We found that the provider had made the improvements set out in the action plan submitted in response to the previous inspection. People's care and treatment was now planned and delivered in a way that was intended to ensure their safety and welfare and they were now systems in place to ensure they were protected against the risk of infection.

During a routine inspection

We were unable to speak to patients as no one had an appointments booked at the time of the inspection. The service was staffed by one dentist and one nurse/receptionist. Staff meetings and appraisals were carried out informally and not documented. Patients understood the care and treatment choices available to them. Treatment options were explained to patients and they were also provided with a written copy documenting the treatment option selected and the fees payable.

On the day of the inspection the practice appeared to be clean. There were appropriate processes in place for the decontamination of instruments, but there was no infection control policy and infection control audits had not been undertaken.

The premises were on the first floor and accessed only by stairs that were in need of maintenance. We were told arrangements could be made for patients requiring level access to be treated at another practice.

People were assessed and treated by a dental surgeon. A medical history was taken for each person and updated regularly. There were arrangements in place to deal with foreseeable emergencies but these were not adequate
