Independence, choice and control
People told us they were supported to make choices with staff support, such as what they wanted to eat and where they wanted to spend their time. People and, if appropriate, their relatives participated in care plan reviews. People were supported to be independent. Some people were able to leave the building without support or supervision if this was their choice. A staff member stated, “There are plans in place so residents can leave…some take a phone, others have a set time to make contact by and some go out with their family or friends.” A person using the service told us, “I’m going shopping later, (gesturing to a staff member) You’ll take me won’t you?”
Staff spoke about people with kindness and compassion. They knew people well and were observed to provide person centred care during times of distress. One staff member informed us, “This is my first job in care, I am proud my job is to make someone smile every day.” Staff knew people well and supported people in line with their preferences and interests.
The provider and staff ensured people's care plans had current information to promote their independence in areas such as mobility, communication and participating in activities both in the home and in the local community.
