During a check to make sure that the improvements required had been made

When we visited Facial Aesthetic Dental Centre Limited in June 2013, we found concerns with requirements relating to workers. This was because there were shortfalls in relation to gaining a full employment history and seeking criminal disclosure and barring checks for one staff member before they had started work. The lack of appropriate checks potentially placed patients at risk by staff who were not assessed as suitable to provide care and support. A compliance action was set.

The provider wrote to us and provided us with an action plan. They informed us measures had been implemented to ensure a robust recruitment procedure was followed for prospective new staff. We were informed any gaps in employment history had been attended to and were now were explored as part of the interview and recruitment process and documented accordingly.

We were also informed individuals would not commence employment until Disclosure and Barring checks had been completed and were satisfactory. The provider had arrangements in place to ensure any staff working without the required checks were appropriately supervised and risk assessed.

During a routine inspection

We saw signed patient declarations which demonstrated that people had understood the nature of the proposed treatment services and consented to them. We spoke with four people who used the service on the day of our visit. They were satisfied with the treatment provided. They said that they were given a range of options regarding treatments available and were able to make informed decisions on the treatment they required. They said the dentist and dental hygienist explained the procedures to them and the fees that the treatments would cost, which enabled them to make informed choices.

There was a range of patient information leaflets detailing treatment options available in the reception area for people to read whilst waiting or to take home with them.

People's privacy and dignity was respected; all consultations and treatment were undertaken in the privacy of the dentist's and dental hygienist's treatment rooms.

We found people's medical history had been checked at each examination and any changes in medication or health status were updated. This helped to inform the dentist of any issues that could impact upon treatment options.

Effective systems were in place to reduce the risk and spread of infection. People told us the practice and treatment rooms were always very clean and well maintained.

Staff said they felt well supported and were all complimentary about working at the service.
