During a routine inspection

We spoke with two people using the service. They told us that the dentist "always keeps us informed" of what dental treatments involved. When people first contacted the practice they were able to discuss their dental needs with either the dentist or the dental nurse. Following an examination they would discuss treatment options with the dentist who would explain what treatments were involved and what the costs would be.

The people we spoke with told us that the dentist checked their health status at each appointment. They said that they were told about the risks and benefits of treatments. Staff had been trained in what to do in a medical emergency. Emergency drugs and oxygen were available and there were procedures in place to check that these were in date and in good working order.

People were cared for in a clean, hygienic environment. All medicines were stored in the surgery or in locked cupboards or rooms. People's medical histories would be checked before any medications were provided. There were systems in place to record the expiry dates of medicines.

Staff received appropriate professional development. They undertook mandatory training in appropriate topics such as infection control and how to respond to medical emergencies.

The people that we spoke with described staff as approachable and said that if they had any concerns or suggestions they would be happy to raise these.
