All Inspections

During a routine inspection

We carried out an inspection at Albion Dental Practice in July 2013 and found non-compliance with Regulation 12 of the Health and Social Care Act 2008 (HSCA). This was because not all relevant government guidance in relation to infection control had been followed. The provider submitted an action plan with an expiry date of Oct 31st 2013. We noted that the necessary improvements were made by the practice ahead of the date submitted on the action plan.

We spoke with the registered manager, a dentist and a dental nurse and looked at the practice's records relating to infection control and decontamination. At this inspection we found that the provider had taken the steps they needed to achieve compliance.

During a routine inspection

During our inspection we spoke to a total of five staff: one dentist, one hygienist, a dental nurse and two receptionists. We took evidence from other sources to help us understand the needs and views of the patients who used the service, including a patient satisfaction survey, minutes of staff meetings and our review of the surgery's complaints log. We also spoke to five patients on the day of inspection.

The patients we spoke with told us that they were very happy with the dental treatment at this practice. One patient told us 'I like it here, they have been helpful and brilliant'. The receptionist told us, 'We have a very modern practice and we are very up to date'. The dentist told us, 'We are very flexible, and the staff are excellent'. Staff told us they felt supported and enjoyed working at the practice. A patient told us 'The staff come across as very well trained and confident'.

All the staff we interviewed knew their roles in protecting vulnerable adults and children.

The practice had systems in place to assess and continually review the service that it provided and was making improvements where needed.

However, we found the practice was not following infection control policies and staff were unable to demonstrate a good understanding of infection control procedures.
