During an inspection looking at part of the service

At our last inspection in 31st May 2013 we found the registered person was not fully meeting this outcome because we found the safety, health and welfare of people who used the service was compromised because the provider had not followed effective recruitment procedures and had not ensured the information specified in Schedule 3 of the health and social care act 2008 was available in respect of a person employed for the purposes of carrying on a regulated activity. The registered person sent us an action plan telling us what actions they would take to become fully compliant with the outcome.

At this inspection we found that the registered person had an effective recruitment system in place that would ensure that no person was employed to carry out the regulated activity unless they were of good character and that they had the right qualifications skills and experience to carry out the role they were employed to do.

During a routine inspection

We spoke to patients who used the service, some of whom had been with one of the dentists for over 20 years. One person told us their dentist 'really put themselves out' and was extremely patient with their relative who had a fear of dentists. Another said 'they are brilliant; they always fit you in if there is an emergency'.

We found all staff had received training in safeguarding children and vulnerable adults. We asked a patient if they felt safe when they used the service and they said 'absolutely'.

Patients we spoke to said the service was 'always spotless' the cleanliness was 'immaculate' and the nurses 'always have gloves on when they're doing anything'. During our visit we found all areas were clean and tidy.

We found the safety, health and welfare of people who used the service was compromised because the provider had not followed effective recruitment and selection practices.

People who used the service were asked for their views about their care and treatment and they were acted upon. Patients we spoke said they had not had any cause to complain and they were 'as happy as Larry' there.
