All Inspections

During an inspection looking at part of the service

We carried out this inspection because when we visited the practice in July 2012 we judged that people were not fully protected from the risk of infection. This was because not all relevant guidance to dentists had been followed. The arrangements for the decontamination and examination of dental instruments fell short of the recommendations of the Department of Health (DH). The guidance was in the form of 'Health Technical Memorandum 01-05: Decontamination in primary care dental practices'.

In April 2013 the DH amended the guidance and relaxed the recommendations so that the practice was meeting the guidance in relation to the scrubbing/washing and rinsing of dental instruments.

During this visit we found that the decontamination flow in the ground floor treatment room was now clear from 'dirty' to 'clean'. Instruments were now being examined under a lit magnifying glass to ensure there was no residual debris before sterilisation.

During an inspection looking at part of the service

When we last inspected this service we found that staff had not attended training in safeguarding vulnerable adults or the Mental Capacity Act 2005. During this visit the receptionist confirmed that three out of four staff had completed training and that one of the dentists had booked and paid for training to be completed in the near future.

During a routine inspection

We read the comments book where people who used the service could provide feedback on the service provided. There were positive comments regarding the helpful receptionist, excellent service, the dentist and other staff. Comments about faults in the appointment system led to a change in the wording of text messages sent to people to remind them about their appointment.

We met people attending the practice for checks and treatment. They told us they chose the practice for various reasons. One example was that the practice was conveniently located for them. People commented on the cleanliness of the practice, the friendly and polite staff and their satisfaction with the treatment they received. They all said that the dentist fully explained treatment to them and some said they felt safe attending for treatment. One person we met commented on the kind nature of the dentist when dealing with their child with learning disabilities. Another person told us they had to use two buses to reach the practice but that they did so because the dentist they saw was 'gentle, thorough and careful'. Several people said they would recommend the practice.

One of the dentists we met spoke about the need for sensitivity and having respect for people. They told us how they give people dietary advice when needed and how they carry out oral cancer checks when carrying out examinations.
