During an inspection looking at part of the service

We were concerned during our last inspection in March 2013 that the provider was not appropriately registered with the Information Commissioner's Office for data protection purposes. We were also concerned that there was no evidence to show staff had been vaccinated against infectious diseases such as Hepatitis B and Tetanus and that a number of policies and procedures in relation to the running of the practice were either out of date, incomplete or did not relate to the day to day practice of the surgery.

We asked the provider to send us an action plan to demonstrate how they would meet the regulations. The purpose of this visit was to check if the provider was compliant with the regulations. We found that all of the actions identified within the provider's action plan had been fully achieved and compliance with the regulations now reached.

We saw that the provider was now appropriately registered with the Information Commissioner's Office for data protection purposes and that staff demonstrated an understanding of data protection. Policies relating to infection control, spillages and blood borne viruses, cleaning and maintenance, decontamination of dental instruments and complaints had all been reviewed and updated. Immunisation records for all staff were now in place and demonstrated all staff were appropriately vaccinated against infectious diseases.

20 March 2013

During a routine inspection

We spoke with three people who were patients at the practice. People we spoke with were happy with the treatment provided. People said:

'I know exactly what is happening with my teeth'

'No complaints'

People told us the dentist always explained what they were doing, the treatment options available and gave them advice on how to care for their teeth.

We reviewed four people's records. We found completed records for dental examinations, assessments, treatment planning and advice. All patient records were up to date, well documented and stored securely.

We looked at infection control and decontamination policies and procedures and saw that the relevant guidance for the cleaning of dental instruments was followed. Contracts were in place for clinical waste, maintenance of sterilisation equipment and x-ray machines.

There were sufficient numbers of qualified staff. Staff had received annual training in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and emergency procedures and appropriate medical supplies were in place to deal with emergencies.

We reviewed policies and procedures for infection control, spillages/blood borne viruses, cleaning, decontamination and complaints. Policies and procedures were either out of date, incomplete or did not relate to the day to day practice of the surgery. We reviewed staff immunisation records and found no records had been kept. This meant there was a lack of proper information about the management of care.

19 March 2012

During a routine inspection

We spoke with one patient who told us they were happy with the service provided. They said the premises were clean and tidy and the staff were friendly and professional. Patient satisfaction surveys returned to the surgery for 2010/2011 were looked at. They indicated that patients were overwhelmingly happy with the care and treatment provided.
