During a check to make sure that the improvements required had been made

Our last inspection on 30 September 2013 identified some concerns that the provider did not have suitable arrangements in place for obtaining, and acting in accordance with, the consent of patients who had limited mental capacity. We found that the provider did not have an effective system to regularly assess and monitor the quality of service that patients received.

We asked the provider to send us a report of the changes they would make to comply with the standards they were not meeting.

During a routine inspection

We spoke with three patients who used the service and all stated they were happy with the care and treatment they had received at the practice. All of the patients we spoke with had been with the practice for many years and trusted the dentist. One patient told us that they had bad experiences in the past with other dentists and said that, "I don't dread coming to the dentist anymore." Another patient said, "I would recommend the practice."

Patients we spoke with told us that the dentist gave them information and included them in decisions about their care. Patients told us that their consent was sought for all treatment. We found that the provider did not have arrangements in place for obtaining and recording consent for patients who lacked the capacity to do so, such as vulnerable adults and children.

Care and treatment was planned and delivered in a way that was intended to ensure patients' safety and welfare. The dentist worked effectively with other professionals to ensure good dental care for their patients. Patients received care and treatment that met their needs.

The surgery had effective systems in place to reduce the risk and spread of infection. Patients told us the surgery was clean and well maintained. One patient said the environment was "Pristine." The surgery had effective procedures and practices in place for cleaning and sterilising instruments.

Patients were cared for by staff who were supported to deliver care and treatment safely and to an appropriate standard. Clinical staff were registered with the General Dental Council and had completed on-going learning and development to maintain their registration and enhance their skills.

We found that the provider did not have an effective system to regularly assess and monitor the quality of service that patients received.
