All Inspections

10 April 2012

During an inspection looking at part of the service

People using the service had complex needs which meant they were not all able to tell us their experiences; however staff helped us to use the most appropriate methods for us to understand the experiences of people using the service. This included the use of sign language. We also saw minutes of the regular residents meetings where people's views were recorded. We found that the views and experiences of the people using the service were taken into account in the way the service was provided and delivered.

We observed that staff interacted confidently with people and were appropriate and friendly in their approach. People's interaction with the staff team conveyed that they were relaxed in their presence.

12 December 2011

During a routine inspection

We visited The Leys on 12 December 2011. Not all the people were able to communicate verbally but staff supported us to engage with people in an appropriate way and we were able to observe how people reacted to the staff team in order to inform our judgements. When some of the staff communicated with people we observed that sign language was used to support verbal communication to ensure that people understood what was being said to them.

One person was very keen to show us their bedroom and the large Christmas tree they had in the room, and others indicated that they had been involved in dressing the tree in the communal lounge.

People who used the service were all registered with local GP's and supported to attend health appointments. However we did not see how people had been involved in their plans of care or had agreed them.

People living at The Leys were relaxed and happy in the staff presence and interacted with them.
