During an inspection looking at part of the service

Our inspection of 26 November 2013 found that the provider had not followed appropriate guidance that ensured they had the correct medical emergency procedures in place. We found that the provider had not ensured that all staff had completed their annual medical emergency training and that the practice did not have all emergency medicines available as required by the Resuscitation Council UK. In addition, we found that some emergency medicines available for use in the practice had expired.

During this inspection, we found that the provider had ensured all staff in the practice had undertaken training in medical emergencies. The emergency medicines within the practice were in accordance with current guidance and the practice had an effective system in use that monitored the expiry of emergency medicines.

During a routine inspection

The practice had two dentists and a hygienist who provided dental treatment. This included general and cosmetic treatment. We spoke with ten people to gain their views and experience of the service and treatment received from their dentist. People were very complementary about the service received. They commented 'I have been coming here for 15 years and have always had really good treatment'. Another person said 'I was always worried about my teeth and what treatment might be required, but now I am much more relaxed and less anxious with this practice'.

People told us they could express their views and make informed decisions about their treatment. We read four individual dental treatment records. All four records showed the reasons why treatment was recommended, people's agreement and choice of treatment options and oral health advice provided.

The provider had procedures in place to deal with a medical emergency. However, some of the procedures did not follow the guidelines from the Resuscitation Council UK.

There were good procedures in place to clean and sterilise dental equipment to minimise the risk of people acquiring an infection. Staff had received regular training to prevent the risk of infection. Staff spoken with were aware of their responsibilities in reducing the risk of infection within the practice.

Staff felt well supported with their personal development and training by the provider and practice manager. One staff member said 'Brilliant, I love working here, it's a really good place to work'.
