During an inspection looking at part of the service

We carried out this announced inspection on 23 September 2021 under section 60 of the Health and Social Care Act 2008 as part of our regulatory functions. We planned the inspection to check whether the registered provider was meeting the legal requirements in the Health and Social Care Act 2008 and associated regulations. The inspection was led by a Care Quality Commission, (CQC), inspector who was supported by a specialist dental adviser.

As part of this inspection we asked;

• Is it safe?

• Is it effective?

• Is it well-led?

These questions form the framework for the areas we look at during the inspection.

Our findings were:

Are services safe?

We found this practice was providing safe care in accordance with the relevant regulations.

Are services effective?

We found this practice was providing effective care in accordance with the relevant regulations.

Are services well-led?

We found this practice was providing well-led care in accordance with the relevant regulations.

Background

Straight Road Dental Practice Limited is in Colchester, Essex and provides NHS and private dental care and treatment for adults and children.

There is level access to the practice for people who use wheelchairs and those with pushchairs. Car parking spaces, including dedicated parking for people with disabilities, are available at the practice.

The dental team includes two dentists, two dental nurses, one dental hygiene therapist, one receptionist, the practice manager and a cleaner. The practice has two treatment rooms.

The practice is owned by an individual who is the principal dentist there. They have legal responsibility for meeting the requirements in the Health and Social Care Act 2008 and associated regulations about how the practice is run.

During the inspection we spoke with two dentists, two dental nurses, the receptionist and the practice manager. We looked at practice policies and procedures and other records about how the service is managed.

The practice is open: Monday to Friday from 9am to 5.30pm.

Our key findings were:

  • The practice appeared to be visibly clean and well-maintained.
  • The provider had infection control procedures which reflected published guidance.
  • Staff knew how to deal with emergencies. Not all appropriate medicines and life-saving equipment were available. The practice took immediate action to rectify this.
  • The provider had systems to help them manage risk to patients and staff.
  • The provider had safeguarding processes and staff knew their responsibilities for safeguarding vulnerable adults and children.
  • The provider had staff recruitment procedures which reflected current legislation.
  • The clinical staff provided patients’ care and treatment in line with current guidelines.
  • Staff treated patients with dignity and respect and took care to protect their privacy and personal information.
  • Staff provided preventive care and supported patients to ensure better oral health.
  • The appointment system took account of patients’ needs.
  • The provider had effective leadership and a culture of continuous improvement.
  • Staff felt involved and supported and worked as a team.
  • The provider asked staff and patients for feedback about the services they provided.
  • The provider dealt with complaints positively and efficiently.
  • The provider had information governance arrangements.

There were areas where the provider could make improvements. They should:

  • Implement an effective system of checks of medical emergency equipment and medicines taking into account the guidelines issued by the Resuscitation Council (UK) and the General Dental Council.

During a routine inspection

Following our inspection of the service we spoke with three people by telephone who had received treatment at the practice on the day of our visit.

All the people we spoke with were very complimentary about the service and treatment they had received at Straight Road Dental Practice and would recommend the practice to family and friends. Comments included 'They are wonderful, very friendly and accommodating. It provides a very nice atmosphere' and 'All the staff are very good and it is always very clean. My treatment is always explained to me.' Another person who had visited the practice for the first time told us 'They were so kind and so lovely. It was my first visit and a brilliant experience. They took down all my medical details and gave me some treatment. This was fully explained to me.'

Everyone we spoke with told us they were always provided with information about their treatment in a way that they could understand and this included treatment options and related costs. They all felt very involved in their treatment.

We found that the surgery was clean and tidy and that staff understood the cleaning procedures to be followed. We saw that there were effective systems in place to reduce the risk and spread of cross infection.

We found that the staff were appropriately trained and supported and that the provider had systems in place to ensure the quality and safety of the service provided.
