During a routine inspection
Patients said the different treatment options were always explained to them as well as the cost. One person told us, 'My dentist is very clear about what treatment I need, the cost and the options I have. I don't feel like I'm pushed into anything I don't want or need and if there's an alternative, such as the dental hospital, then the dentistwill also tell me about it.'
We watched how the staff dealt with people as they arrived. We saw staff were very polite, putting people at their ease. Patients we spoke with described staff and dentists as being 'friendly,' 'reassuring' and 'professional.'
We saw there were safeguarding procedures in place. There was also on-going training and support for staff to help keep them up-to-date with best practice. One of the staff told us they felt 'well trained and confident' they would be able to respond appropriately if they suspected or witnessed abuse.
The practice was clean and well maintained with good procedures in place to prevent cross infection. People we spoke with commented on how clean the surgery always was and were complimentary about the environment.
We saw staff at the practice were properly trained, worked to a professional code of conduct and kept their skills updated. Staff told us they felt very supported. One of the dental nurses told us she felt the practice was very good at supporting all staff with their work and career development. She said, 'We are given time each week to make sure we can keep our training up to date and we can arrange and go on courses that we need or would benefit the practice.'
There were measures in place to make sure the quality of the service received by patients was maintained or improved. There were measures in place to check the practice was achieving good outcomes for patients and these findings were used to plan and make improvements.
