During an inspection in response to concerns

We carried out our inspection as a result of concerns raised with the Care Quality Commission about infection control standards not being followed by staff.

During the inspection we spoke with two people using the service, the provider and three staff. People told us they were satisfied with the infection control standards of the practice and were happy with the overall service provided. One person said "I wouldn't go anywhere else." Another said "they are all good at their jobs, I have no complaints."

There were effective systems in place to reduce the risk and spread of infection. The surgery rooms were clean, hygienic and well maintained. Staff wore personal protective equipment during treatments to minimise cross infection risks and the Department of Health infection control guidelines were being followed. A separate decontamination room had been incorporated into the design of the practice to further reduce cross infection risks.

During a routine inspection

During our inspection we spoke with three people who use the service and three members of staff. All the people we spoke with were very pleased with the service provided. One person said "I have been coming here as long as I can remember, it's the best.' Another said 'the dentist is brilliant and always looks at the best treatment options for you.'

We observed staff speaking to people in a kind and friendly manner and staff were always polite and respectful when greeting people at the reception. People told us that the dentist had given them all the information required to make an informed decision about their treatment. One person said 'everything is always explained to me by the dentist.'

There were effective systems in place to reduce the risk and spread of infection and the practice and the surgery rooms were clean, well maintained and uncluttered. People who use the service and staff were provided with adequate personal protective equipment to wear during treatment episodes to ensure cross contamination risks were minimised.

Staff received appropriate professional development to carry out their job roles effectively. This meant they were qualified and able to meet the needs of the people who use the service.

There was an effective complaints system available. People were aware of the complaints procedure and complaints had been investigated and resolved where possible to the satisfaction of the complainant.
