All Inspections

During a routine inspection

On our inspection of 22 January 2014 we found that although qualified staff were registered with their appropriate professional organisation, the provider had not made suitable arrangements to operate effective recruitment procedures. We also found that improvements were required with regard to health and safety assessments and equipment servicing.

The provider wrote to us on 22 January 2014 to inform us staff references would be sought and Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) checks would be applied for. We were also informed that arrangements would be made for portable equipment appliance testing and for a fire equipment annual service to be carried out.

During this inspection we reviewed the progress the provider had made in requirements relating to workers and assessing and monitoring the quality of the service. We saw staff records which indicated staff had references and (DBS) checks completed. We were also provided with maintenance records as evidence of the servicing of electrical and fire equipment.

During a routine inspection

We spoke with two patients, the receptionist, a dental nurse and the dentist. Patients who used the dental practice spoke highly about the quality of dental service they received. They told us they were treated with respect and staff were always welcoming and approachable.

Patients told us that they were fully involved in all decisions about their dental treatment and treatment options, which were explained to them in a way that they understood.

Patients told us that all costs were made clear to them before treatment commenced and confirmed that they were asked for their consent prior to all dental treatment.

Patients said their privacy and dignity were respected and the premises including the dental treatment room were always clean.

The practice had a recruitment policy. However, some essential checks had not been carried out prior to two new staff being employed.

Patients had the opportunity to provide feedback about the service. The patients we spoke with confirmed that they would recommend the dental practice to other people. However, fire safety checks and some electrical checks had not been carried out.

Verbal and written comments from patients included 'My experience of the dental practice has been very good,' 'I have found that there has been clear communication. Every step of the way of my treatment was very clearly explained,' 'I am very impressed,' 'It's very welcoming,' and 'It's very clean.'
