During a routine inspection

We were able to speak with four people who were visiting the practice for treatment. Each person had been attending the practice for many years and expressed their satisfaction at the service they received. One person told us 'I have been coming to the practice for 37 years and I am pleased with the treatment that I receive'. Another person told us 'I rang the practice today and managed to get an emergency appointment '.

There were arrangements in place to deal with unforeseeable emergencies. Staff received training in medical emergencies and cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR).

Care and treatment was planned and delivered in a way that was intended to ensure people's safety and welfare. The four people we spoke with told us that they were involved in making decisions about their dental care, were told about options in treatment plans and were informed of costs. We looked at the dental records for 20 people and saw that a medical history was taken and updated at each visit. The records showed that people were given explanations of their treatments and oral hygiene advice.

The dentist, dental nurses and practice manager we spoke with were aware of the Department of Health guidance for dental practice regarding decontamination: Health Technical Memorandum (HTM) 01-05. The lead dental nurse had responsibility for infection control and decontamination procedures. The practice was working to best practice guidance and had a dedicated decontamination room.
