During a routine inspection

We carried out this announced inspection on 11 July 2017 under Section 60 of the Health and Social Care Act 2008 as part of our regulatory functions. We planned the inspection to check whether the registered provider was meeting the legal requirements in the Health and Social Care Act 2008 and associated regulations. The inspection was led by a Care Quality Commission (CQC) inspector who was supported by a specialist dental adviser.

To get to the heart of patients’ experiences of care and treatment, we always ask the following five questions:

• Is it safe?

• Is it effective?

• Is it caring?

• Is it responsive to people’s needs?

• Is it well-led?

These questions form the framework for the areas we look at during the inspection.

Our findings were:

Are services safe?

We found that this practice was providing safe care in accordance with the relevant regulations.

During a routine inspection

Nine people who used the service told us they were treated with respect and were happy with the service they received. One person said: 'the staff are totally respectful' and another person said: 'I always trust the dentist and have been coming here for 33 years and wouldn't go anywhere else'. People said that the dentists provided them with relevant information about their proposed treatment, including the cost. We saw that the cost of various treatment options was on display in the entrance hallway. People told us the information provided was very thorough and the dentist took time to allow them to make decisions about their treatment.

People told us their privacy and confidentiality was protected by the staff and dentists, and they were always spoken to in a respectful manner. People said that the dentist had always asked them for an update on their health at each visit and had included relevant information in their treatment plan. One person said: 'they ask about my health and it is very important as I am diabetic, the dentist always pays close attention to this'.

The practice was clean and well maintained and all of the people we spoke with told us that the practice treatment rooms were very clean and the dentists' practices were hygienic.

Staff were qualified and had appropriate training and supervision and were supported by the practice to update their training to do their job safely. Five staff we spoke with told us they were well supported by the practice to understand their responsibilities, and with their personal development.
