All Inspections

During an assessment under our new approach

We found the practice had not met all regulations.

Patients’ care and treatment was provided in line with current guidance.

Patients were treated with dignity and respect and at the time of our inspection, could access care, support and treatment when required.

This inspection highlighted several issues and omissions such as those relating to fire safety management, recruitment, medicines management, sedation, infection prevention and control, and governance.

The practice is in Reading and provides private dental care and treatment for adults and children.

There was step-free access to the practice and car parking, including dedicated parking for disabled people, was available near the practice.

The practice had 4 treatment rooms.

During the inspection we spoke with a dentist, hygienist, dental nurse, receptionist and the provider’s personal assistant.

The provider was not complying with all regulations.

Full details of the regulation the provider was not meeting are within the inspection findings below.

We have asked the provider for an action plan in response to the concerns found at this inspection.

During a check to make sure that the improvements required had been made

The service sent us evidence that hygiene and infection control guidance was being followed and regular audits were being undertaken. The service had a plan for working towards best practice on guidance relevant to dental practices. We saw action plans were in place to improve hygiene and infection control. The manager confirmed progress had been made on these actions.

27 June 2013

During a routine inspection

The registered manager had recently left this practice. The new manager was applying to become registered with the Care Quality Commission (CQC). We spoke with four patients who use the service, the manager, a receptionist, two dental nurses and the dentist during this inspection.

Patients told us they were provided with information on any dental conditions, treatments, costs and risks before deciding on their treatment. They said they were given treatment plans to consider. Patient records contained medical histories, detailed information from check-ups, records of patient's previous dental treatment and treatment plans.

Patients said they had access to appointments when needed, including when they required emergency treatment. One patient told us 'This is the best dental practice I have ever been to.' All the patients we spoke with were satisfied with the dental care they received from Woodley Dental Practice.

The practice had procedures for reducing the risk of healthcare associated infections. Staff were aware of how to decontaminate instruments appropriately. Decontamination equipment was tested and serviced as suggested by manufacturers. However the practice did not have a comprehensive hygiene and infection control audit programme to ensure any risks of healthcare associated infection were identified and reduced.

We saw staff received appropriate professional development which enabled them to maintain their registration with the General Dental Council.
