During a routine inspection

Compass Drug Dependency Clinic - Malton provided specialist substance misuse treatment for adult substance users. The team was practitioner led with recovery workers and nurses who worked alongside General Practitioners with Special Interests (GPwSI).

Advice and support was offered around dealing with all aspects of substance misuse. These aspects of the service were not inspected as under the Health and Social Care Act they are not defined as regulated activities. CQC has registered this service in relation to the work the nurses completed around the treatment of minor injuries; screening for blood borne viruses; giving advice on injecting, completing health checks and screening; and providing vaccinations.

We spoke with two people who used the service and with staff available on the day. People spoke positively about the service provided to them. We found that before people received treatment they were asked for their consent and the provider acted in accordance with their wishes.

We found effective management systems were in place to promote people's welfare and safety. Staff were aware of current good practice guidance and they were knowledgeable about the people they supported. We found that all staff worked together with other services to ensure people could access the appropriate treatment. The service was staffed appropriately to support people through all stages of their care.

During a routine inspection

During our inspection we looked at records and documentation for people who used the service. We saw that consent to care and treatment was regularly obtained both verbally and in written form. People who used the service had a detailed care plan that looked at all aspects of their life. Staff used the information provided to ensure people accessed the right services.

There was a complaints procedure, as well as other monitoring processes in place to ensure that any issues were addressed quickly and appropriately. Staff told us that they dealt with concerns and grumbles as they arose.

Staff told us they had to have a proper check before they could start work at Compass this was to ensure they were suitable to work with vulnerable people.

During the visit people told us that they are involved in the development of their own treatment plan. They said that Compass work with other agencies when they needed to and always explained what they are doing. People also said that they are always being asked for their opinion of the service and that they felt their opinion mattered. All of the people spoken with said that staff treated them with respect and dignity at all times and they never felt like when they were being judged because of their lifestyle.
