Date of assessment: 6 to 11 November 2024. Cambian Lufton Manor College is a college for autistic people and people with a learning disability aged 16 to 25. 14 young people were living at the service at the time of our assessment and preferred to be referred to as students. An assessment has been undertaken of a specialist service that is used by autistic people or people with a learning disability. We have assessed the service against ‘Right support, right care, right culture’ guidance to make judgements about whether the provider guaranteed people with a learning disability and autistic people respect, equality, dignity, choices, independence and good access to local communities that most people take for granted. The service had made improvements and is no longer in breach of regulations. Staff now ensured students whose liberty was potentially restricted, was done so in line with current legislation. Staff were exceptional at treating students as individuals and were exceptional at promoting their independence, so they had choice and control over their own care, treatment and wellbeing. The service was exceptional at ensuring students could access the care, support and treatment they needed when they needed it. Staff managed medicines safely and were exceptional at ensuring students were not over-medicated by medicines that restricted and controlled behaviour. Staff had been recruited safely into the service and had the right skills and training to support and prepare students for their next steps after college. Staff made sure people understood their care and treatment to enable them to give informed consent. If students lacked capacity to consent, staff followed current legislation and made decisions in a student’s best interest. There was a culture of continuous improvement and governance systems were robust to ensure students received a safe and quality service.
