Our view of the service
Date of assessment 14 July to 22 July 2024. Stoneyford Care Home is a ‘care home’ providing personal care and support to people over 18, and support to people with a mental health condition, physical disabilities and people living with dementia. At the time of the assessment, the service was supporting 28 people with their personal care needs. Stoneyford Care Home was last rated Good (published 20 May 2024). This assessment has been completed following the Care Quality Commission (CQC) new approach to assessment; Single Assessment Framework (SAF). We undertook this assessment as we received concerns in relation to staffing and the quality of care being provided. We assessed a total of 34 quality statements from the safe, effective, caring, responsive and well-led key questions and found areas of concern and identified 5 breaches of regulation relating to people receiving safe treatment and care, person-centred care, dignity and respect, premises and equipment and governance of the service. The service was not meeting people’s needs and expectations safely. The care delivered now was not person-centred and there were insufficient quality monitoring processes in place to identify the issues found. In instances where CQC have decided to take civil or criminal enforcement action against a provider, we will publish this information on our website after any representations and/or appeals have been concluded. We have also asked the provider for an action plan in response to the concerns found at this assessment. This service is being placed in special measures. The purpose of special measures is to ensure that services providing inadequate care make significant improvements. A further unannounced short visit was completed on 11 September 2024 which saw improvements to people safety and improved manual handling techniques.
People's experience of this service
People and their relatives told us they didn’t always feel safe living at Stoneyford Care Home. People said they were concerned about manual handling practices and the availability of staff to support them in communal areas. People experienced poor hygiene and infection prevention and control practices within areas of the home. People stated they were fearful of negative repercussions if they voiced their concerns and had witnessed and experienced this type of treatment previously. People described the culture of the home as being of concern as they had experienced language barriers with some staff and poor person-centred care and support. We undertook a brief follow up visit following issue of enforcement action to ensure actions taken by the provider and management team had improved people’s immediate safety.
