During a routine inspection

We spoke with six patients and two members of staff on the day of our visit. The patients we spoke with were all complimentary about the care that they received at Diaverum UK Limited (Crawley). Patients told us that they were involved in decisions that were made about their care. They said that they understood the choices available to them because the staff at the unit took time to explain treatments to them.

One patient said, "The staff here are great, wonderful, they go out of their way to help you". Another patient said, "The treatment is good here. The staff are helpful and considerate".

We found that the practice provided clear information for people to make informed choices about their care. We also found that the unit had clear procedures to ensure that people's consent had been obtained prior to treatment.

We found that the unit was staffed with adequate numbers of staff who had been trained to meet with the specific needs of patients receiving dialysis.

We found that the unit had procedures in place to ensure that patients comments and complaints were dealt with appropriately and in line with the units policies.

During a routine inspection

We visited Diaverum UK Limited (Crawley) on a very busy day. There had been heavy snow fall in the area which had delayed patient transport putting a significant strain on the service and its staff. We were able to talk with five patients, the unit manager and two facilities managers on the day of our visit. However we were unable to talk with other members of staff as they were involved with essential patient care and were unable to spare the time.

The people that we spoke with told us that they felt well supported by the staff at the service. They said that staff were kind and attentive and always treated them with dignity and respect.

Some people complained about the transport service and the length of time that they were kept waiting for hospital transport. The manager told us that they were aware that this was a cause of frustration for people. The manager said that they did report peoples concerns regarding transport at transport meetings but said that the day to day running of transport was, "Outside of our control".
