Our view of the service
Date of assessment 29 April - 20 May 2024. Earlsdon Lodge is a residential care home providing accommodation for up to 33 older people or younger adults who require personal care. It provides support to people who may have a diagnosis of dementia, mental health, or a sensory impairment. This unannounced assessment assessed 15 quality statements across Safe and Well Led only. This was the first assessment of Earlsdon Lodge Care Home under the new provider, Earlsdon Care Ltd which was registered with the Care Quality Commission on 21 December 2022. This assessment was completed due to information of concern received about the management of risk related to people's health and wellbeing, and good governance. This unannounced assessment examined those risks. Staff had access to policies and procedures to support them in their role and ensure they worked in accordance with the providers expectations. Sometimes records were not sufficiently clear to show they had always been followed. Risks associated with people’s needs and their home environment were assessed, and relatives felt their family members were safe. Staff had access to ongoing training and support to help them meet people’s needs safely. Sometimes staffing arrangements were not effective in ensuring risks were managed safely and consistently. Some areas of the home required improved cleaning to help prevent the risk of infection. Managers made sure recruitment checks were undertaken on all staff to ensure only those individuals that were deemed suitable and fit would be employed to support people at the service. The provider had audit systems and processes in place to help ensure staff followed safe policies and procedures. Health and safety checks were undertaken to assist in ongoing monitoring. Some records were not sufficiently detailed or accurate which meant it was not clear safe and consistent care and support was always provided.
People's experience of this service
Prior to our visit, information we received suggested people had not always experienced positive care and support. During our visit, people provided mixed feedback about the staff, and staffing arrangements, but stated they did feel safe at the home. People and relatives told us there had been positive changes made at the home and this had resulted in improvements in the service. Relatives told us they felt their family members were safe living at the home. Relatives said they were involved in decisions about their family member’s care and staff were usually accessible when they visited. People received their medicines to support their needs and were supported to access health professionals when needed. People and relatives felt management staff were approachable and acted upon any issues they raised with them. Relatives were not always aware of systems in place to support the ongoing quality monitoring of the service to enable their involvement in any decisions that impacted on them or the home. However, they did feel management staff were approachable if they needed to raise any issues.
