During a routine inspection

The people who used the service were provided with support to meet their individual needs. We spoke with the registered manager, the deputy, four care workers, four people who used the service and two relatives. We asked the registered manager at Islington Home Care Complex Needs Service for contact details of people who used the service. We randomly selected people to contact. The registered manager confirmed that they all had mental capacity.

One person told us, 'The staff are cheerful and happy.' They explained they only had to call the office and the staff would arrange the help they needed. A second person said, 'Staff come and look after me.' A third person explained that staff were very good in their roles and staff supported them by cooking food. One relative told us 'in the early days I had concerns, but staff dealt with them well.' They explained the overall quality of the service was, 'Very good.' A second relative spoke positively about the care worker who looked after the person using the service.

People's privacy and dignity were supported. People received care and support that met their needs. The people we spoke with confirmed they felt safe in the care of staff. People were protected from abuse.

We found that the recruitment process had been reviewed for care staff. We saw that measures to assess and monitor the service were in place.

During a routine inspection

During telephone interviews, people using the service and their relatives made positive comments about the care and support they received. They felt respected, safe and were involved in decision-making about their care. The staff were approachable, listened to their views, acted on them and treated them with respect.

One person said "This is an absolutely lovely service". The service was in regular contact, visited them, asked them what they needed and they felt they were getting what they wanted. The service provided was regularly reviewed, updated and generally delivered on time. "You know there is always someone there to help". Staff were friendly, competent and flexible in adapting their working practices to provide a good quality of service. "My carer is great". They did not comment on the safeguarding procedures in place, support staff received or quality assurance monitoring system.

During the inspection we saw that people using the service had access to information that enabled them to choose if this was the service they required. There was also training and support that made staff aware of the importance of treating people with dignity, respect and acting accordingly when fulfilling their responsibilities. There was also suitable safeguarding policies, procedures and training that was followed. Staff received the support and guidance they required to do their jobs and there were effective quality assurance monitoring systems.
