During an inspection looking at part of the service

We spoke to two members of care staff who told us that improvements had been made to the lunch time experience for people living in the home. They said there were more staff available at meal times and they were more confident about the way in which they helped people to eat and enjoy their food.

People living in the home were observed to be relaxed during their lunch. Those we spoke to said they had enjoyed their meal. We saw that the improvements made by the provider had enhanced the meal time experience and people were now getting the support they needed as set out in their care plans. Improvements included reviewing care plans, reassessing who ate where, deploying more staff at meal times and ensuring people were supported by care staff with the knowledge and skills required.

During a routine inspection

We spoke to two relatives and two people using the service. During this visit we spent most of our time on the units where people who have dementia are supported. Where we were unable to get the views of people we observed their interactions with staff and other people living there. We read their care plans and other documents to gain evidence of their experience of using this service.

The people we spoke to were happy with the care provided. They said staff were 'lovely', 'very nice' and 'very good'. They said they received the care and support they needed. We observed staff talking to people in a respectful manner. They responded to requests and checked out with people that they had what they needed. We noted a good rapport between staff and people using the service.

During a routine inspection

People who use the service told us they were happy with the care and support they received. They said staff were kind and caring and their needs were met with dignity and respect.

The people that use the service at Bulmer House have dementia and therefore not everyone was able to tell us about their experiences. To help us to understand the experiences people have we used our SOFI (Short Observational Framework for Inspection) tool. The SOFI tool allows us to spend time watching what is going on in a service and helps us to record how people spend their time, the type of support they get and whether they have positive experiences. Some people using the service were able to tell us about their experiences and we also spoke with visitors to the service
