During a routine inspection

There were five people living in the home on the day of our inspection. We spoke with three of the people living there, three staff and the acting manager. Two people were not able to communicate very well verbally with us so we observed how staff interacted with them and their responses when staff supported them.

People were not always supported to do the things they wanted when they wanted because there were not always enough staff available to do this.

Staff supported people to ensure their health care needs were met. Generally people were supported to eat a healthy and nutritious diet. Some people on special diets were not given meals that ensured their needs were fully met. One person told us, "The food is good and the staff are lovely".

Arrangements were in place to ensure that people were safeguarded from harm. People told us they liked living in the home. One person told us, 'No problems here. If I am worried I will tell the staff'.

We saw that people's medication was stored safely and given to people as prescribed to ensure their health and well being.

The service had not been adequately managed and audits were not in place to ensure that standards were being maintained. People's views about the service had not been gathered, this meant the provider could not be sure that the service provided fully met people's needs.

During a routine inspection

We found that the five people living at 1 The Slieve looked happy and comfortable in the home. We saw that all the ladies got on very well they were friendly and helped to support each other. For example making cups of tea or fetching things for each other. Three people were able to have a conversation with us and told us how they spent their days in the home. The other two people had limited conversation but engaged with us through their actions and facial expressions. We read about how each person spent their day. The information available told us that a person's day did not vary much from day to day.

Our observations of the people living in the home and the interaction we saw between them and care staff showed they were relaxed and related easily to care staff. People were seen to engage easily with care staff and move freely and easily around the home.

Care staff and people living in the home told us that some family members visit the home and contribute to their care. People living in the home also visit their relatives at their homes.
