During a routine inspection
People told us different things about the care they received at Torrwood. Some people were very satisfied. Others told us about the ways in which some aspects of living in the home did not meet their needs.
One person said 'I didn't choose to come here, social services put me here. I'm not very happy living here but they are doing their best'.
Another person told us 'I came here for a month's trial first to see if I liked it. I saw lots of leaflets but as soon as I saw this one I thought that's the place for me. I've been here for a year now and I'm very happy'.
Many of the people we spoke with expressed concern at the length of time staff took to answer their call bell. This issue had also been brought up at a residents' meeting on 30/06/11. One person told us 'The only thing here is the call bells, you have to wait.'
People able to express their views told us they liked the food in the home and that they had a choice of meals and could choose where they ate them. One person said 'the food here is excellent. You do have a choice. They give you a menu and you choose what you would like. I spend time and eat my meals in my own room. It's my choice'. One person said that there was always a choice but 'you have to know that you can ask.'
Most people told us that the doctor visited if needed. There is a planned weekly visit to the home. One person told us that the doctor had come 'promptly'. People can access chiropody, opticians and dental care.
People were satisfied with the home environment. One person said 'It is very nice here.' People told us that they were quite satisfied with their bedrooms. People had been able to personalise them to reflect their tastes and needs. Communal rooms are clean, comfortable and well furnished.
