All Inspections

7 August 2013

During a routine inspection

During this inspection we looked at what improvements had been made following our last inspection in January 2013. We also spent time observing care practices and spoke with six people who lived at the home, care and nursing staff and the Manager.

We saw that people had a good rapport with staff. People were encouraged to be as independent as possible and were able to spend their time as they wished. Staff assisted people appropriately and in an unhurried way.

People we spoke with were happy living at The Mews. One person who had recently moved into the home described it as 'Excellent'. Other people commented; 'It's a nice place', 'I like it here', 'My visitors can come when they want' and 'There's always plenty of things going on'.

Individual care records were in place directing staff in the delivery of people's care and support.

Suitable arrangements were in place with regards to safeguarding and protecting the rights of people.

A safe system was in place for the management and administration of people's prescribed medication.

On-going training and support was made available to assist and develop the staff team. Staff spoken with said the Manager was 'approachable' and that there was 'good team work' within the home.

Systems to monitor and review the quality of service provided had been developed. This information helped to identify where the service could be improved further.

During a routine inspection

From our observations we saw that people living at The Mews had varying physical and cognitive abilities. This meant some people were not always able to make informed decisions about their health and care needs or how they would want to be supported.

We spent sometime observing people and how staff interacted and supported them. It was evident that staff understood people's needs and were helpful and polite when assisting people.

We saw that support was unhurried and took place in the privacy of people's rooms. People spoken with said the staff were 'friendly' and they 'liked them'. One person said 'They [the staff] help me with what I need'.

The Mews provided spacious accommodation to meet the physical needs of people. A variety of aids and adaptations were available to enable people to be as independent as possible. Bedrooms had been personalised and offered privacy and space for people.

We found that improvements could be made to records kept about the home and the care and support offered to people. This included; the management and administration of medication, staff training and development and standards within the environment.
