All Inspections

1 July 2013

During a routine inspection

We completed our inspection with an 'expert by experience' from Age UK. Our expert spent their day observing and speaking with people who used the service and their relatives. We spoke with nine people who lived at Deeside and one relative. We also spoke with six staff members which included the manager.

People were involved in making decisions about their care and support. We saw that they were treated with dignity and respect. We saw that staff offered them choices and encouraged them to make decisions. One person said 'they help me to stay independent here'. We saw that there were regular residents meetings and where possible requested changes were made.

People's needs were assessed and care and support was delivered to meet those needs. People we spoke with said 'I am well looked after here' and 'this home is not too bad; they look after me OK and come quickly when I ring my bell'. People told us that there weren't enough activities to do. We saw that the provider had employed an activities coordinator who was putting together a timetable of events for people to try.

There had been concerns about the correct reporting of safeguarding incidents. We saw that this had been investigated and actions taken to ensure staff knew the correct procedure. We noted that since the investigation the provider had responded appropriately to an allegation of abuse.

Staff were supported to deliver care and support to an appropriate standard. Staff received regular supervision and took part in personal development meetings. There were also some opportunities to obtain further relevant qualifications.

The provider had an effective process to assess and monitor the quality of the service that people receive.

4 January 2013

During a routine inspection

We spoke with three people who lived at Deeside. They told us that they were happy and felt involved in decisions that were made. They said that the staff were friendly and 'always helpful' and that they felt 'safe and well looked after'. They also said that they would like to do more and were looking forward to the new activities coordinator starting work.

Not all of the care and support plans were complete which meant that there was a risk that people's support needs would not always be met.

Staff were trained and told us they felt competent to perform their roles. However they told us that they were not confident that they were fully supported.

There was an effective assessing and monitoring process in place.
