All Inspections

8 August 2013

During a routine inspection

The people living at Longfurrows had complex needs and were unable to discuss their care with us but during our inspection we saw that they were relaxed and happy.

It was evident that staff knew people well and we saw that there were friendly and caring interactions between members of staff and people living in the home. We saw that staff listened to people and treated them with respect.

People received care and support that met their needs and took into account their individual preferences. Staff were able to demonstrate that they understood the specific needs of the people using the service and provided care in a person-centred manner.

We found that staff received the training and support they needed to provide care and support safely.

Relatives who completed surveys as part of the provider's quality monitoring process all expressed satisfaction with the service and were complimentary about the standard of care. One person said: 'I continue to be extremely grateful for the wonderful, loving care given to my [relative].' Relatives who completed surveys also made positive comments about the atmosphere in the home. One said: 'We have always been welcomed warmly.'

We gathered evidence of people's experiences of the service by talking with people, observing how they spent their time and noting how they interacted with other people living in the home and with staff.

The people living at Longfurrows had complex needs and some were not able or chose not to speak with us. We saw that people smiled and appeared relaxed and comfortable with staff and others living in the home.

Relatives who returned questionnaires as part of the home's own quality assurance process were complimentary about the care provided at the home. One relative, when asked if they had any suggestions for improvements, wrote 'How do you improve excellent?' Another relative said 'On all occasions we have visited [our relative] we have been warmly welcomed.'

A health care professional who completed the home's survey made positive comments about the staff including 'As always staff are extremely professional and deeply caring' and '[Staff are] wonderful advocates for the residents.'

During our inspection we saw that people received good care and that staff treated them with respect.

During a routine inspection

Some of the people living at Longfurrows were not able to communicate with us verbally and some chose not to talk with us. They shared their views through gestures, facial expressions and body language wherever possible. We saw people were engaged in a range of activities, relaxed and comfortable with staff and other people using the service.

Relatives and healthcare professionals who completed surveys as part of the home's own quality assurance process all gave positive responses to the questions. The questions related to the standard of care, cleanliness, dignity and respect, staff, information, privacy and confidentiality. All the completed surveys rated all areas as 'good' or 'excellent'.
