Newgate Lane is a residential care home providing personal care that can accommodate up to 4 people. This is a specialist service for people with learning disabilities or autistic spectrum disorder, physical disability and sensory impairment. At the time of our assessment 3 people were living at the service. We undertook this responsive assessment following information of concern we received about this service. We assessed a total of 6 quality statements across the safe and well-led key questions and have combined the scores for these areas with scores from the last inspection. At this assessment we found the provider was in breach of 1 regulation. The provider failed to ensure they consistently provided good governance and oversight to manage risk, performance and outcomes. For the breach identified we have asked the provider for an action plan in response to the concerns found at this assessment.

People and their relatives provided positive feedback about the care overall.
People told us that they felt safe at the service and that staff were kind, and we observed positive interactions between staff and people during our visits. Feedback included “I like it here, staff are kind to me, they hold my hand inside sometimes and outside” and “Yes, I like the house, it’s alright. I get around easily, can go upstairs to the office to see staff, they are alright with that. They go out with you, today I’ve been to Costa, they cook for me in the evenings.” People felt happy to speak to staff and said they were listened to. People gave examples of how staff supported them to manage risk including the safe use of gas appliances and accessing the community safely. People felt they could speak to staff if they were unwell, and that staff would help them.
Relatives felt that their loved ones were cared for and that their needs were understood. Relatives felt that they were involved in decision making and were updated of any changes. They felt that the environment was safe and that their loved ones were happy. Overall relatives felt that the staff communicated with them well, however we received some feedback that this could be improved at the weekends.
While the people we spoke to expressed that they were generally happy with their care, our assessment found some elements of care in peoples records did not always meet the standards therefore we could not be assured of consistent and good care being provided.
