Peninsula Medical Practice Grange over Sands Health Centre is located at Kents Bank Road, Grange over Sands LA11 7DJ. The practice delivers primary medical services to a list size of 3000 patients under a general medical services (GMS) contract with NHS England, and is part of the NHS Morecambe Bay Clinical Commissioning Group.

The provider is registered with CQC to deliver the Regulated Activities; diagnostic and screening procedures, maternity and midwifery services and treatment of disease, disorder or injury and surgical procedures. The practice a purpose built health centre in the town of Grange over Sands. The practice has one branch located at Fairfield Surgery, Station Road, Flookburgh, LA11 7JY. We did not visit Fairfield Surgery as part of this inspection inspection.

The practice population has a high proportion of patients over the age of 65 which accounts for 59.4% of its total patient list compared to the england average of 27%. Life expectancy for males is 81.7 years and females 82.4 years, this is slightly above national averages.

Information published by Public Health England rates the level of deprivation within the practice population group as nine on a scale of one to ten. Level one represents the highest levels of deprivation and level ten the lowest.

The practice consists of two GP partners (one male and one female), two practice managers, two practice nurses, a medicines manager and a small team of administrative and reception staff. The registered manager, who is also a doctor and a partner, did not provide any patient appointments.

The surgery is open between 8am and 6.30pm Monday and Friday, with other appointments available through a local out of hours service provider.

We carried out an announced focused inspection at Peninsula Medical Practice Grange over Sands Health Centre on 18 June 2019. We decided to undertake this inspection following our annual review of the information available to us. This inspection looked at the following key questions Effective and Well Led

We based our judgement of the quality of care at this service on a combination of:

  • what we found when we inspected
  • information from our ongoing monitoring of data about services and
  • information from the provider, patients, the public and other organisations.

We have rated this practice as good overall and good for all population groups.

We found that:

  • Patients received effective care and treatment that met their needs.
  • Staff were well trained and competent in the delivery of good patient care.
  • The way the practice was led and managed promoted the delivery of high-quality, person-centre care.

The areas where the provider should make improvements are:

  • Continue to review their audit processes in line with best practice guidelines.
  • Continue to develop information sharing within their leadership team.
