Our view of the service
Date of assessment: 14 November to 20 November 2024. The Sussex Village Homecare Service is a domiciliary care agency providing personal care to people living in their own homes. People were supported by a caring and compassionate staff team who were trained and supervised appropriately. Staff were mostly recruited safely, where a shortfall was identified during our assessment, the registered manager rectified it immediately. People’s medicines were administered and managed safely. The safeguarding policy was followed by staff to ensure people were protected from the risk of harm or abuse. Staff followed infection prevent and control procedures to keep people safe. Staff sought health and social care professional advice in response to people’s changing needs. Staff followed the advice, monitored outcomes and provided feedback to professionals when needed. People benefitted from a core staff team who understood and respected their preferences and communication methods. Staff provided person-centred care and clearly described who and what was important to the people they supported. The service was run by a dedicated registered manager who created an open and inclusive culture for people, their relatives and staff. The registered manager sought people’s feedback and learned from groups, forums and professionals to continually improve people’s experience.
People's experience of this service
People and their relatives told us they were happy with the service, they gave positive feedback about the staff. Their comments included, “They’re all marvellous. I have a great deal of support from them. They help me with washing dressing, hair brushing. I don’t have many changes with the carers, it depends on who's working but they are all lovely, they are different ones but I know them well, their names, their families.” People told us staff were well trained and supported them as they wished. A person said, “I think the staff know what they are doing and seem wonderfully trained and conscientious and caring making sure I have everything I need.” Staff and management responded to people’s requests to make changes to their planned care and scheduled visits. A person told us, “The manager does reviews for me, to check I am happy with the care and update my paperwork.” A relative said, “They have always been accommodating to our requests for earlier or later visits, I wouldn't be without them.” People were supported to remain as independent as possible. A relative commented, “With [loved one’s] independence, staff are really sweet because they don’t just plonk food in front of [person], they read out what they can have and [person] chooses. They are really great.” People and their relatives told us staff treated them as individuals and got to know them well. Comments included, “The service and the people (staff) are very, very good, efficient and courteous and even fun. We have a joke and laugh which makes it all more pleasant.”
