During an inspection in response to concerns

We carried out this review because we received concerns about the care people receive and the cleanliness of the environment.

We spoke with four people who told us they enjoyed living in the home, and all commented that staff were caring and friendly. One person said, 'It's very nice here, the staff are kind, I have a nice room and the food is good.' Another person told us, 'Outside of your own home this is the best you will find; everyone is so welcoming and nothing is too much trouble.'

During our inspection we also spoke with two relatives and both commented on the quality of the service within the home.' One relative told us that, 'People living in the home always look well cared for and well presented.' Another relative told us, 'The staff are lovely and understanding.'

No one raised any concerns during our visit. The people we spoke with said if they were not happy they would tell the staff.

During a themed inspection looking at Dignity and Nutrition

People told us what it was like to live at Soothill Manor. They described how they were treated by staff and their involvement in making choices about their care. They also told us about the quality and choice of food and drinks available. This was because this inspection was part of a themed inspection programme to assess whether older people living in care homes were treated with dignity and respect and whether their nutritional needs were met.

The inspection team was led by a Care Quality Commission (CQC) inspector joined by a practising professional and an Expert by Experience, who has personal experience of using or caring for someone who uses this type of service.

All the people that we spoke with said they were happy at Soothill Manor. One person said, 'It's great the staff are so kind and caring.' Another person said, 'You could not ask for a better place to live.' People also said they were involved in their care, with their preferences being sought and taken into consideration. This included going to bed and getting up when they wanted and getting involved in activities during the day.

The people we spoke with told us they felt safe in the home. Comments from people's relatives included: 'Staff are so caring' and 'I know my relative is safe here.' One relative said, 'I visit at different times of the day, so I know it's not just done just for me.'

Relatives also told us they were happy with all aspects of the service. Comments included, 'Staff support people well' and 'They are very approachable.'

The people we spoke with said the staff were very caring. One person said staff, 'Could not do enough for people.' Another person said they were, 'Patient and kind.' People also said they were involved in their care, with their preferences being sought and taken into consideration.

We observed a positive approach by staff in the way they involved people and respected their dignity. For example taking time to ask people what they wanted to eat and drink, asking if they had sufficient to eat and if they enjoyed the meal.
