Independence, choice and control

Score: 3

People were able to make decisions and choices about their care. Staff promoted people’s independence as much as possible. One person told us they did their own weekly shop, and they enjoyed this activity.

Staff and leaders told us they promoted people choices and independence. A staff member said, “People can choose what they want to eat and there is a menu.” The registered manager told us, “There are weekly house meetings, meals for the week are chosen and activities are discussed. People help to prepare meals with the staff. They also help in other ways like with the washing up, shopping at the local shops with staff. If people want to have something different at mealtimes, then they can, they don't always have to have what is cooked.” This meant people could enjoy the things they liked to do and maintain their independence for as long as possible.

During our visit we saw staff being polite and offering choices to people always making sure their needs were met, they were chatting, talking about the plans for a big birthday party and ensuring that people could watch their favourite programs. They were also planning a shopping trip out later in the day. This meant people were listened to and their input was valued by staff.

The provider promoted people’s independence. People’s choices, likes and preferences were recorded in care records. People had the opportunity to meet with staff on a regular basis to make decisions about their care. Families and relatives were also involved in the care planning process. This meant people could be assured that staff considered the things that were important to them.
