All Inspections

During an inspection looking at part of the service

During our previous inspection visit on 30 January 2013, we found that staff training, supervision and appraisal records were incomplete. This meant that it was not possible to confirm that staff had attended relevant training, or whether they had been supervised and appraised for their role.

At our inspection on 22 July 2014, we found that staff training files had been updated and completed. However, staff informed us that they had difficulties accessing and attending training due to time constraints.

We also found that, although a new process had been introduced recently, appraisals were not always being carried out in a timely manner. Staff we spoke with confirmed that they had not received an appraisal during their employment.

The manager told us that staff meetings were not held on a regular basis and that they were arranged when the need arose.

During a routine inspection

People said they were satisfied with the care the unit provided. One person told us, 'I've been coming here since it opened and I've always been happy with the treatment.' They said the staff team were friendly and efficient. One person told us, 'The staff are so nice and helpful' they are great.' Another commented, 'I really can't fault the staff and I trust them implicitly. They know their job well.'

The unit had its own transport service which people could use if they wished. One person told us, 'The transport is wonderful. The drivers can't do enough for you.' Another said, 'The journeys can be long because we've got to pick everyone up but it's quite jolly on the bus and we have a laugh with the drivers.'

People told us their care was provided in a clean and well-maintained environment. One person said, 'I have no concerns about the cleanliness here.' Another told us, 'There are good standards of cleanliness and superb facilities.' All confirmed satisfaction with staff practices in infection control and said they would speak out if they observed unsafe practices, but this had never happened.

People said the service was well-run and efficient. One person told us, 'When I come here I usually get straight on (the dialysis machine) ' there's never much of a wait.' Another person commented, 'The service is worry-free for me ' they seem to know what they're doing here.' People said they could share their views about the service through surveys and questionnaires.
