During a routine inspection

We used a number of different methods to help us understand the experiences of people using the service because not all people could communicate verbally due to their complex needs. We visited one of the supported living schemes which accommodated six people and we observed how people were being supported by staff with their personal care and nutrition.

People we spoke with were happy about the support they received from MCCH Society Limited (Howbury Centre). People told us that staff were 'polite', 'respectful' and 'kind' to them. All 13 people we spoke with told us that their privacy and dignity were respected. People said they were involved in planning their support and knew the choices available to them. People told us that staff supported them adequately and that they had no concerns, but knew how to complain if they were unhappy about the service.

People were able to express their views and were involved in making decisions about their care and support. People who used the service had support plans in place with relevant risk assessments. The provider had arrangements in place to deal with foreseeable emergencies. There were policies and procedures in place to protect vulnerable adults from abuse. Staff were supported through induction, training, supervision and team meeting. There were systems in place to monitor the quality of the service provided.

During a routine inspection

We used a number of different methods to help us understand the experiences of people using the service because people using the service had complex needs which meant they were unable to tell us about their experiences. We reviewed satisfaction surveys and spoke to family members. We also observed activities undertaken with five people from one of the supported living units..

A relative told us that the regular staff were very conscientious and respected the needs of the individual using the service. We were told that staff did the care plan with the individual and family members.

We found that the people were involved in their care planning and received personalised care and support based on an assessment of their needs. Appropriate checks were carried out to ensure only suitable people were employed. However, we were unable to confirm that adequate numbers of staff had received the appropriate training as records were not available at the time of our inspection.
