Independence, choice and control

Score: 3

People confirmed staff supported them to make choices about their daily and long-term care needs. Through staff encouragement and relevant equipment people were supported to maximise their independence. People told us they were supported to take part in activities and maintain contact with their family and friends. During our assessment, we observed people were fully engaged and enjoying the activities offered to them. Staff were aware of those who needed support to make choices and express their preferences around activities, food and drink decisions.

The provider promoted a culture which encouraged people’s independence and to have choice and control over their own care, treatment and wellbeing. Systems were in place to capture people’s views and experiences about the care they received such as resident meetings and individual care reviews. This enabled the provider to consider how people were supported to ensure people’s rights and choices were being maintained.

Staff and the registered manager provided examples of how they supported people to regain or maintain their levels of independence such as the use of specialised equipment.
