The key question of Caring was rated Good at our last inspection and continues to be rated Good following this assessment. People were supported to be as independent as possible. Staff understood how to give people choice and control over how they spent their time. People’s choices and preferences were respected by staff.

Independence, choice and control

People’s independence, choice and control was promoted. One person told us, “I have my capacities intact, I’m lucky. I ask questions. They involve me and tell me what’s happening. If there is going to be a change, they tell me. I do what I want, and they respect my decisions.” Another person told us, "We have monthly meetings, and we discuss how to improve this place and anything we are not happy about. I know how to complain if I need to. There is absolutely nothing to complain about here." People told us they were supported to be independent, "The staff are always around. They come when I need them. In the morning, they help me with washing and dressing. I can do some things on my own and they let me do this." One relative commented, “[Loved one] can choose all their meals and activities. They join in the activities they want. Staff discuss things with them.” Another relative told us their loved one chose all their meals and activities they wanted to do.

Staff told us everyone was able to make day to day choices about their care. This included what they ate, and where they spent their time. They described how they supported people to make choices, such as showing them items of clothing when supporting them to get dressed. Staff knew people well and explained to us how they offered people choices they knew they enjoyed to help keep them well. For example, one person needed to increase the amount they drank to stay well. Staff spoke with the person and their family to find out what the person liked to drink and offered them a choice of these drinks to improve their hydration. People were able to have visitors at any time they wished and were able to use communal areas such as the restaurant and gardens as well as entertain people in their apartments.

People's care plans included their choices and preferences. There was information about what people could do and how staff could support them to be independent. There were people who managed their own medicines, staff had assessed if they were safe to do this and only supported where needed such as ordering the medicines. There was information about when people liked to go out of the building for walks and if they needed support to do this safely. People's capacity to make decisions had been assessed and recorded including the support people needed to make decisions.

People were given choice, control over their day-to-day care and their independence promoted. People walked around the home independently, they were not restricted. People spent their time as they wished. We saw staff ask people what they wanted to do. Staff listened to people and respected their wishes; and assisted them where needed. People were enabled to do the things they could do.
