All Inspections

5 November 2013

During a routine inspection

We carried out this inspection as part of our scheduled inspections to check on the care and welfare of people using this service. The visit was unannounced so neither the provider nor staff knew we would be visiting.

During the inspection we spoke with the manager of another Accord service as the registered manager was on annual leave, the care coordinator, three care staff, three people who used the service and one relative.

Furlong House provided care to people who lived within the sheltered care scheme and who wished to purchase this support from the care team based there. Staff were available 24 hours a day.

We saw that there were arrangements in place to gain people's consent to the care and support they required. People told us they received the care they wanted and needed; records we saw also confirmed this. One person told us: 'I am happy the girls they are very kind". Another person said: "I feel safe here".

Appropriate systems were in place to ensure that people who needed and had requested support to administer their medicines, received their medicines safely and as prescribed.

Staff received training and support to provide people with the care they needed. They had completed induction training when they started work and had undertaken additional training to develop and improve their knowledge and skills.

The service had systems in place to review and monitor the care people received.

During a routine inspection

Furlong House provided care to people who lived within the sheltered care scheme and who wished to purchase this support from the care team based there. Staff were available 24 hours a day.

During our visit we spoke with four people who lived at, or were visiting Furlong House, four staff members and the manager. Through a process called 'pathway tracking' we looked at care plans, spoke with people about the care they received and asked staff about how they provided support. This helped us establish that people were getting appropriate care that met their needs, choices and supported their rights.

All the people we spoke with were positive about the care and support they received from Furlong House care staff. One person said, "They are always cheerful and always give me the help I need", another person said, ""I like to be as independent as possible but staff are always ready to help if needed".

Appropriate systems were in place to ensure that people who needed and had requested support to administer their medicines, received their medicines safely and as prescribed.

The service had appropriate arrangements in place to ensure that there were sufficient and appropriately skilled and trained staff available to provide support to people at Furlong House.

The home had appropriate systems in place to enable people to raise concerns and be confident that their concerns would be investigated and addressed.

During an inspection looking at part of the service

We carried out this review to check on the care and welfare of people using this service.

We spoke to eight people who live at Furlong House and receive personal care from Furlong House staff. People told us that they were happy with the care that they received. They told us that staff consulted them about the care they needed and provided care in a way that met their needs and capabilities. People told us "Staff are very caring, we have no complaints". They told us that staff were respectful and provided assistance when they needed it.

People told us that they had an agreed number of visits but if they wanted to stay in bed, or stay up later than planned, care staff would come back later to assist them. People told us that they mostly have their main meal in the communal dining room but staff would also provide a meal or a sandwich in their flat if they wished.

Improvements made to the management of medicines give greater assurance that people will receive their medicines safely and as prescribed.
