Independence, choice and control
Relatives we spoke with told us their family member’s independence was promoted. A relative told us, “They give [my family member] a lot of encouragement and they ask them what they want to do.” Another relative told us, “There is always something happening in the home. They have outside people come in too.” Other relatives told us about activities their family members had experienced, for example, lunches at the garden centre and trips to the pub. We were told there were no restrictions with visitors and the home was encouraging and welcoming to anyone who wanted to visit their friend or family member. A relative told us their family member’s initial assessment was thorough to ensure they got an accurate overview of how the person wanted to be supported. They told us their family member was more mobile as the service had ordered them a walker which had improved their independence and enabled them to walk around the home safely.
Staff told us there were a variety of people living at Hartsholme House, most who were living with different stages of dementia. They told us some people went out and about by themselves and others were supported to various community events and outings. A staff member told us, “I support people to do as much as I can within their capabilities.” They also said, “I don’t go straight in and start assisting people, I encourage and give them time, offering some prompts. It’s not about getting the task done.”
We observed people being treated as individuals with their choices respected by staff. People were freely walking around the home. The registered manager told us how they had improved the lift to make it easier to use by just having 2 buttons for up and down. Some people’s bedrooms had direct access to the gardens. A thank you card from a relative had stated how much pleasure this gave to their family member. There was a freezer in the dining room with ice creams and snack stations around the home where people could help themselves. The registered manager said this had been implemented because a person told them they didn’t want to ask all the time when they fancied something. We observed different dining areas so people could choose where they’d like to eat. A smaller dining area with a kitchenette was used by a group of people who met up for lunch. A person told us they didn’t like to eat in the other dining rooms because it could be noisy, so the smaller dining area had been created to suit their preferences. The kitchenette meant they could also make their own drinks.
People were supported by a consistent staff team who knew them well. Care plans were regularly reviewed and people’s information was up to date. People, where possible, and their relatives were involved in discussions around their care and treatment.
