Staff encouraged people to make choices about their care. People's independence was promoted to help them retain their daily living skills and improve their well-being.

Independence, choice and control

People confirmed staff supported them to make choices about their daily and long-term care needs. One person told us, "I can choose to go down and have lunch or have it here in my room, need to drink a lot so choice of drinks. It is all done to suit yourself. Get up when you want, get breakfast when you want." Staff supported people to maximise their independence. People told us they were supported to take part in activities and maintain contact with their family and friends. People told us staff always treated them with dignity and respect.

Staff and the registered manager provided examples of how they supported people to regain or maintain their levels of independence, including accessing the local community. Staff and the registered manager supported people to make decisions around how they spent their days, including the activities they enjoyed. The registered manager spoke strongly on staff being advocates for people living full and active lives as possible.

During our assessment, we observed that staff had time to engage people and support them with their daily activities and choices. Through our observations, we were assured that people's independence and wellbeing was promoted.

The registered manager and provider promoted a culture which encouraged people’s independence and to have choice and control over their own care, treatment and wellbeing. Systems were in place to capture people’s views and experiences about the care they received such as resident meetings and individual care reviews. This enabled the registered manager and provider to consider how people were supported to ensure people’s rights and choices were being maintained.
