Our view of the service

Date of assessment 23 and 25 September 2024. Bowerfield House is a ‘care home’ providing personal and nursing care and support to older people and people living with dementia. This inspection was prompted in part by a notification of an incident following which a person using the service came to harm. This incident is subject to further investigation as to whether any regulatory action should be taken. As a result, this inspection did not examine the circumstances around the incident. We looked at all quality statements. At this inspection we found there continued to be a breach of regulation in relation to governance and oversight. This was because there had not been enough oversight of matters in relation to health and safety, and the systems in place were not suitably robust to ensure lessons were learnt and records were completed accurately. Systems for oversight were in place and the provider responded quickly to matters in relation to our health and safety concerns; however, these systems needed to be embedded with oversight to ensure these systems were effective. The service was now managing medicines, and medicines records more effectively since the last inspection, although some improvements were still needed to the management of creams and thickening powders. The provider had made the required improvements in relation to infection prevention and control. There was a new manager in post who was positively regarded by people using the service and staff. There was a stable staff team and staff felt well supported. The environment needed improvements to ensure it met people’s needs, and further work was needed to ensure people had access to stimulation and activities. People were generally happy with the care and support they received and overall people’s care needs were being met.

People's experience of this service

People told us they felt safe and well cared for and spoke highly of the staff team. People and families noted that there had been some challenges with constant changes of manager and a high use of agency staff but that these issues were much improved over the past few months. People felt that the staff would support them to access services and support where this was needed and were generally happy with how they were supported to eat and drink. People did not always get personalised care and some people and families told us they wanted more activities and stimulation for people.
