During a routine inspection

People were cared for by staff who were supported to deliver care and treatment safely and to an appropriate standard. People that used the service were positive about the support they received. When we asked one person if they liked living at Grandison Road they said "I love it here."

We found people who used the service were relaxed and happy in the care of the staff. One person said that staff "Are ok, we get along alright" and "The staff are good."

We saw that there were opportunities for people using the service to make choices and have a say in how their treatment or care was delivered. We found that care and treatment was personalised and equality, diversity and personal preference where taken into account. During our visit we found evidence that people took part in activities in the community if they wanted to.

Effective management systems were in place to ensure that people's safety and wellbeing was promoted.

During a routine inspection

We met one person living at the service during our visit. They told us they were happy in their home. This person explained they had been fully involved in making choices and decisions about their support including the running of their home. They said they had monthly meetings with their key worker and staff to discuss 'anything and everything'. They advised they had a lot of privacy and that all of the staff respected this, especially when they were in their own bedroom. They told us that 'all staff knock on the door and never just enter'.

People told us they were happy with their support plans and that staff provided them with the right support.

We saw that each person living at the service had a support file with detailed information about their personal and social needs and instructions for staff detailing how the person wished to be supported. Support plans were individualised and included a lot of individual information for each person's support, management strategies and health and personal care records. The records had various sections which showed how individual information was identified as being important to the people being supported. For example they had a section called 'about me' where people living at the service shared information that they chose and felt was important for staff to know about.

We contacted the local authorities' contracts and monitoring team in Liverpool prior to this inspection.

During an inspection looking at part of the service

We did not speak to people who used the service about this outcome.

We did not conduct a visit to this service, however we reviewed all the information we held on this provider in August 2012.

The provider completed a Provider Compliance Assessment (PCA) on this outcome area, which gave us information on how the staff are supported to provide care and treatment to the people who use the services. We also requested the provider sent us details of the training completed by the staff employed to show that the staff had access to the appropriate training to help them support the people they cared for.

During a routine inspection

People told us they were fully involved in making decisions about their care and treatment and about how it was provided.

People said they had information about how to complain and would do if they needed to.

People told us they had regualry reviewed their care/support plans and changes had been made to them when needed.

People told us that staff had been polite and respectful and had provided them with the right support.

We were told by people using the service that they felt safe living at the home and that they would tell someone if they had any worries.

People told us a manager who works for the company had carried out regular visits to the home to check that everything was ok.
