Independence, choice and control

Score: 3

People told us they had choice how they spent their time and the routines they wished to follow. One person said, “I go out for a walk if I want to or spend time in the garden. I am self-sufficient and like to do my own washing or help out with jobs around here.” Another person told us they attend groups they want to in the community and go to church. They also said they liked to have their own supply of snacks and drinks in their room and go shopping to obtain these.

Staff knew people well and how they wished to be supported. Staff understood people’s rights and worked with them as individuals to promote positive outcomes. Activities were supported and staff encouraged people to find ways to spend their time constructively doing activities they wanted to do. Where people had family, they were supported to maintain contact with their family.

Care was person centred and recognised people’s individual strengths and how they wished to be supported. Where people wished to make links in the local community staff supported them to do this. For example, if people wished to attend local groups or attend religious establishments staff helped them to facilitate these activities. Although care was person centred some more detail in care documentation would be helpful for new staff to get to know people better and understand their needs.
